Lap Banded Living – Is Obesity the Last Politically Acceptable form of Discrimination

Improving my quality of life was a key

Improving my quality of life was a key motivator when I chose to have weight loss surgery.  I didn’t want my children to grow up with the stigma of an obese mom, and I wanted to improve my self-esteem amongst other things.  Self-esteem and weight bias go hand in hand.  As someone who has struggled with obesity since childhood, weight bias is something I painfully understand.  Frankly the scars are a part of me that will be with me for life.  The fear of what others think about obesity is one of the reason why I stayed in the closet about my surgery for so long.

This week my 12 year old daughter told me about a you-tube video that she wanted me to watch.  She didn’t tell me what it was about – just that it was this amazing act from the TV showBritain’s Got Talent.  I watched, the emotions flooded through every fiber of my body, as I watched the judges, and the audience react to an obese teenage boy.  This teen had amazing courage, supporting by a friend, his duo partner, who herself displayed tremendous courage.

Take a few minutes and watch this video.  How does it make you feel?  Is weight bias that last politically correct form of discrimination?
